How do pelmets and heavy drapes help keep a room at a comfortable temperature during summer and winter?

In winter, without a pelmet, hot air in the room rises and at the top of the curtain, touches the cold glass of the window, causing the hot air to cool down. This cooled air (which is heavier than warmed air) then drops behind and underneath the curtain entering the room, making the room feel colder.

Pelmets prevent hot air from touching the cold glass in the first place, making your curtains much more effective. And it helps in summer when the flow of air reverses and the pelmet blocks this flow. If you don’t like the look of pelmets, you can purchase ‘invisible pelmets’, where the pelmet is placed on top of the curtain rod and is not visible from the front. https://ecomasterstore.com.au/products/invisible-pelmets?_pos=1&_sid=ad4ce6062&_ss=r

Convection currents are the result of differential heating of air. Lighter (less dense), warm air rises while heavier (more dense) cool air sinks.

The combination of pelmet and curtain eliminates the warm air inside being cooled down by the window (or in other words it stops the convection current). As shown in the diagram below.
