Can you help me to better understand my energy bill?

Can you help me to better understand my energy bill?

Energy bills and energy deals are complex for a reason. If we want to be truthful and a little bit cynical, retailers want you to be confused and complacent.

Energy retailers have relied on you being loyal to their brand, and reliant on you not asking them questions. While at the same time, they attract new customers with better deals and lower prices.

In Victoria for instance, there are currently just over 30 energy retailers to choose from.

Victorian Energy Compare is the only free and independent comparison site, that includes all offers from all retailers, so it's a great place to help you choose the best retailer and offer!

Most people have an aversion to complexity. Retailers rely on this by:
      Having a lack of transparency
      Providing limited or conflicting information
      Multiplying the number of offers and retail choices
      Making the selection process difficult
      Making tariff choices difficult to choose from
      Making things more complex than they need to be.

Energy Retailers now have a responsibility to help you.

Two of the simplest things you can do to save money is:
      1. CHECK your bill that you are getting your concessions
      2. RING your retailer and ask them: "AM I ON YOUR BEST OFFER?"

If possible go the next step:
      3. LOOK at the snapshot - are you paying more or less than last month / last quarter / last year?
      4. Is the billing period monthly or quarterly?
      5. Can you identify the usage or service charge?
      6. How much money is owing? What is the total cost to you?

Are you eligible for concessions?

If you are eligible for concessions – you need to confirm with your retailer every 12-months that the concessions are being applied. Each concession that you are eligible for is applied in addition – you may be eligible for multiple concessions. For instance:
•    Energy concession - DVA / Health CC / Pensioner (saving of about $80 quarter);
•    Medical cooling concession;
•    Life-support concession;
•    Firewood / bottled gas concession.

A pay-on-time-discount is separate from a concession. Check your bill.
If you are struggling to pay – inform your retailer – see retailer hardship policies

Have you requested a Hardship program with your retailer?
Have you informed them you may have difficulty paying this bill?
